New South Wales has recognised the need to attract skilled migrants and is now offering State Nominations to those who have certain occupations the NSW Government has identified as being required in the State following consultations with industry representatives.
At present the occupations in demand are identified on 3 factsheets, grouped in relation to the following sectors:
- the Finance sector including Accountants, Financial Investment Advisers, Insurance Brokers, and Actuaries
- the Information Technology and Communications Technology sector including Software Designers, Systems Managers, and Computer Systems Auditors
- the Pharmaceutical and Bio Technology sector including Pharmacists, Chemists, Research and Development Managers, Biochemists, Labortaory Managers, Biomedical Engineering Technologists, and Chemical Process Analysts
It is expected that the lists of Wanted Occupations will be amended as the NSW Government continues its liaison with industry in the State.
By way of background, a State Nomination significantly lowers the threshold requirements that have to be met by a skilled visa applicant, in that an application can then be made for a Skilled - State Territory Nominated Independent visa (subclass number 137) or a Skills Matching visa (subclass number 134).
A 137 visa has a points pass mark of 70 points, whereas the 134 visa has no points test and a lower requirement in terms of recent work experience.
Such applications are also processed by the Department of Immigration as a priority, meaning a visa decision can be expected sooner than if you were applying for a general skilled visa.
